No increase in teams until the 2016 tournament

UEFA's agreed today that any potential increase in the number of teams competing in a UEFA European Football Championship would not come into place until the 2016 tournament.

Feasibility study
The committee, meeting in Cardiff approved a proposed timeline for a feasibility study into a possible 24-team final round, which provides for a decision by the Executive Committee in November or December this year. UEFA's member associations backed a proposal for an immediate feasibility study into the tournament's expansion at the 31st Ordinary UEFA Congress in Düsseldorf in January. Up to seven stars are possible, which would mean a national association pursues even more comprehensive grassroots policies.

Women's support programme
Finally, the Executive Committee ratified a technical support programme for teams eliminated in the preliminary round of the 2007/09 UEFA European Women's Championship. The scheme will include assistance by UEFA in organising friendly matches in the form of mini-tournaments, and the assignment of a development instructor to each mini-tournament to work with national coaches and players.
